Lab 9

To clarify, please comment out this line in the Javascript for Part 1: e.preventDefault() You'll need to un-comment it out later because you need it for Part 2. Also, note that unless you have some sort of server/PHP configuration running on your computer, you'll need to upload to the server for the PHP code to actually execute and send an email. Have fun! MP2 - Part 2 Deadline Extended till 10/29/10

Hi All, I received a few emails over the weekend where students were having trouble with the assignment. I realize this assignment was a bit more challenging and much less structured. The idea was to give you freedom in implementation as well as encourage you to search for additional resources online. I hope those ambitious goals weren't rubbish and that you didn't struggle too much with the assignment so far, but to be safe, I'm extending the deadline for the assignment till Friday 10/29/10 before 11:59PM. Also remember that you have 5 slip days to allocate among your assignments as you see fit. Between now and Friday, a YouTube video will be posted (uploading now, should be done uploading later tonight) that will guide you through the initial set up of the website layout and I will personally hold a workshop/office hours Wednesday night. Hopefully that will be enough to get you through this assignment. Please feel free to email us or ask us in class if you have an issue. Also if you do email us it certainly helps to include your project files as a .zip. Best, Alex

JavaScript Up Next

Hey All, We're changing gears and are starting JavaScript this week. This marks the end of our dealings with HTML and CSS specific topics and from now on we'll be working on dynamic web pages. We'll still focus on client-side topics this week but next week we will look at AJAX and revisit our introduced but now forgotten server-side buddy. I realize that a few of you will be missing this week due to midterms. It was a hard decision between introducing a new topic or continuing with HTML and CSS, but I think we've spent enough time on the latter topic and could benefit from having extra time to cover JS, PHP, and MySQL. For those of you missing this week's lecture, PLEASE watch the web-cast this week and go over the lecture material. We'll be giving context on JS this week and without that motivation you might be lost as to how JS fits in with everything else. Best, Alex

Mini Project Clarifications

Hi guys, just a couple of clarifications for the mini project: 1. We didn't cover link hover styles today in lecture, so this requirement is now OPTIONAL on the mini project. We'll be covering it next week, but if you would like to incorporate it into your mini project here's a good resource to get you guys started: http://www.echoecho.com/csslinks.htm. 2. We'll be giving you time at the very beginning of next lecture to find "neighbors" to link to in the project. By next Monday, your project should be mostly done with only the link urls missing! 3. If you have any questions, please post them in the website chat room so everyone can see your questions/answers. Also feel free to answer other peoples' questions! If you have a very urgent problem or your chat room message has not been responded to in a couple of days, you may email the staff. Thanks! Amber

Web Design DeCal on YouTube

Hi All, I'm pleased to announce that we'll be placing videos of all lectures this semester on YouTube. We're hoping this will be a valuable resource to you and a nice complement to the lecture slides which will be posted before every lecture. The video of the first lecture is not very high quality as our video camera didn't arrive in time. The following lectures should be much better. Updates

Hi All, Thanks for attending lecture yesterday! It was refreshing seeing a class-full of new faces and getting a chance to meet some of you. We hope you enjoyed lecture and are as excited about learning how to build websites as we are about teaching. Just a few quick updates. We will receive class account forms tomorrow and will hopefully be able to email CCNs and account names then. Also, we will do our best to post lecture slides before class. Yesterday there were some before class preparations that got in the way of uploading the slides. Have a good long weekend!, Alex

Once we've gone through them, rest-assured we will notify you via email. If we don't respond to your current inquiries, it is simply because it is impractical to do so right now. Best, Alex
